from the temperatures we have seen all week. those temperatures that were in the 90s just a day or so ago. we were outside enjoying the afternoon yesterday. you could literally just feel that change. >> when the wind picks it was r i was outside with my family. when the wind picked up, said here comes the front. we got some pretty good thunderstorms as you mention last night through the area. we have some heavy rain. reagan national, i'm pretty impressed because times their numbers are low. they got 3-7b9 26 inches. over they got .26 inches. we are still seaing rain showers as they come through. all of this is tracking to the northeast and pushing through. that is the front there. so as the morning progresses, the rain will move out of virtually all of the entire viewing area. it will take some time.

retrieve the articles. be very careful there. northbound 5 there. no other stents to report at the wilson bridge. traffic running smoothly there. southbound along 270, lanes are open leaving rockville headed out towards the split. the main line as well as the local lanes moving at speed. no problems now on 66. earlier problem that we had out of nutley street has cleared. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. we want to go now to this developing story out of west virginia where the search has resumed for four missing miners. rest canada crews wearing oxygen masks are making their way to one of the rescue chambers. the governor says making into the airtight emergency room is the on only way the miners may have survived the blast on monday. the governor says there is only a sliver of hope that they will be found alive. for the families, it has been heart wrenching. >> i feel sorry for the ones that are here waiting to find

out if that is their loved ones there or not. >> twenty-five miners were killed in the blast on monday. we'll learn more about the rescue efforts in a news conference. coming up later this hour. one of the miners who was still hospitalized from monday's explosion is back home this morning. the governor says he is in total withdrawal and doesn't want to speak to anybody. the family has asked for privacy. the other manager who managed to escape in time remains in intensive car. a dip element from qatar who caused an air scare has to he have loot u.s. today. he slipped into the plane's bathroom and trade to light a cigarette and reportedly joked about trying to light his shoes on fire. he was detaped but not charged due to diplomatic immunity. he will be sent back to qatar or another country. with the nuclear treaty now signed with russia, the united states is getting ready to host a nuclear security summit and a prominent ally won't be here. sources say israel's prime

week's drive-by shooting in southeast d.c. four people died in that shooting. teenager faces four charges of first degree murder while armed, attempted murder while armed and assault with intent to kill. police say he was also driving at the time of the shooting so he is also charged with reckless driving and driving without a permit. police arrested two people in connection with two separate shooting in howard county. daniel palumbo is accused of setting up a meeting where two other people would rob the victim. two people were shot in the leg after an argument broke out between two groups of people. no arrests have been made in a third shooting that same night. gilbert arenas begins his 0- day sentence for -- his 30-day sentence for gun charges. he will share a bunch bed with a roommate. he won't have any chores.

making headlines this morning, a key ingredient in many antibacterial products may pose a health risk and the fda wants pore studies to look into it. some studies suggest a key ingredient called triclosan may interfere with our brains and reproductive systems. fda officials say it is safe to continue using these product but they want to do more research. it is found in soaps be body washes, toothed paste, make-up and certain fabric.

a former producer for the cbs show survivor is now a suspect in his wife's death. he reported has wife missing on monday when the two were in cancun. her body was found yesterday in a sewer near the resort where they were staying. police arrested her husband a short time later. witnesses say they saw the couple fighting on sunday. tiger woods back in competitive golf now to a welcoming crowd. he then went on to shoot his best score ever for the first round of the masters. tiger finished the first day way four under 68. he is just two shots off the lead are who is fred couples at this point. tiger tees off for the second round of the masters at 10: 10:35 this morning. the storms roll out of here and so did summer-like temperatures. what is in store for the weekend. we'll have a look with tony and julie has an eye on the traffic for us as well.

warehouse workers an drivers for the danish brewery carlzberg are now on strike in copenhagen because of the company's decision to take away one workplace perk. previously, these workers were allowed to drink three beers per day outside of their lunch break. beer drinking has been limited just to the lunch breaks only. the beer coolers that used to around the brewery have been removed from everywhere except the can teen. as many as 250 workers were still on strike as of yesterday. >> what you didn't say is they added two more lunch breaks to the day to even it all out. as we head to our business beat of course jobless claims appear to be having less of an

effect on the market. chris cotter joins us from new york. i see you smiling. you're trying to push for more lunch breaks. >> i'm just thinking if i had three plus the five or six that i normally have on my lunch break and i would be good and toasted by afternoon y now you are talking like a wall street exec. that is why they're cutting back. i tell you what. the market, no signs of cutting back here steve. we have -- it looked right for a pull back yesterday. down 7 # the day before t looked like we may continue that yesterday. as we got the job numbers that weren't very good in termed of the weekly numbers up 4 # 0,000 in terms of the initial claims. the market seems to be shrugging that number off every week. we were more concerned with the retail sales numbers that were coming out. and that got us going in the right direction. you see we finished the day up almost 30 points on the nasdaq and just reversing the trend. every time we have a down day, we seem it be able to reverse

welcome back. coming up on 6:30 right now, we are waiting on a news conference on what is happening in west virginia. the search teams are wearing oxygen masks and workers above ground are pumping nitrogen into the ground to try to fish out dangerous gases. they are hoping those four miners made it to airtight

emergency rooms and are waiting to be saved. twenty-five miners were killed in that blast. >> we are expecting to hear more any minute. we'll take you to that when it happens. we want to check in with tony and tuned out what is happening here outside. >> we'll try to squeeze in a weather cast here. we'll start by taking a look at the radar. our temperatures are dropping. we've got some rain showers out to the east. there are some spots of heavy rain off the coast there off it our south and some lightning still see this is the first big picture we've seen here. but just some rain showers scattered around our region. we have seen a little blip show up to our south but primarily to the east. ocean city, 55. win hester, is at 44. wind, that is part of the story this morning and for the first half of the day. wind are blowing out of the northwest at 21 miles per hour gusting up to 28 miles per hour. the forecast for today, clouds

the convention center the next couple of days. >> cherrily is at the con advantage center to tell us about that. >> reporter: you know, we've been telling you all about all of these roads that will be closed. those are all the barricades that are going to be going up starting this weekend to shut down all of those roads. you ought to think about this. you've got more than 40 heads of state. you have ahe got all of their motorcades coming from all the embassies and hotels where they are staying. then you have on top of that all the roads that are going to be closed as well as to blocks around the convention center, that is, and you really do have a traffic nightmare and when we say guide lock, that may not even begin to describe it. vital commuter routes are going to be closed from new york avenue and massachusetts avenue around the con advantage center. everything from k to q streets and seven to tenth streets in northwest.

the mount vent orange metro stop is going to be shut down starting at 9:00 p.m. on sunday and a number of bus routes will be altered. security for the g-45 summit will be tight, a level not seen since president barack obama's inauguration. beginning late sunday evening, the secret service will begin clamping down on security around the summit site. anyone coming in or near the secure perimeter will be asked for identification. some business owners say there has been some confusion whether employees will be allowed in. >> i canada k. park in the parking lot up here. i am allowed to open. i need identification on me and my business name, i can open the store. >> reporter: in addition to i. d. checks, nip coming in as part of the summit or who lives or works here will have their bags searched and the roads around here are going to remain closed starting sunday evening

another country to serve as a diplomat. some other top stories, police need your help finding a missing potomac man. this is rhode island yam henrehan, jr. the 86-year-old walk wade from the national naval center bethesda about 4:00 yesterday afternoon. a 14-year-old boy has now been charged with 41 counts for last week's drive-by shooting in southeast. this includes murder charges. four people died in the shooting. the teen faces four charges of first degree murder while armed, attempted murder while armed and assault with intent to kill. because he was driving, he also faces reckless driving and driving without a permit charges. gilbert areasons begins his 0-day sentence for gun charges today. he will serve two days at the montgomery county detention center in rockville before he leaves for a halfway house where he will have a roommate but no chores are cable television in his room. gilbert arenas was sentenced to

bringing an unlicensed gun into the wizards locker room at the verizon center and apparently following some sort of altercation with a teammate. we await word of a press conference in west virginia to try to get the latest on the situation, trying to get in to find the fewer miners who are still up accounted for. y the rescue teams have gone into the mine -- the rescue temperatures have gone into the mine. they are pumping night yen in to -- nitrogen into to the mine to flush out the bad air. the governor being very cautious. there is the governor right now to update us on the situation. >> we had a long night.

we had a difficult night. we ran into some problems and were notified this morning and the teams worked around the clock and got up into the section again and kevin will slain to you where this all happened and ran into some bad conditions and again had to pull the teams out for their safety. so the procedure now is that they are drilling feverishly over top of that chamber. we want it make sure there is a visual. that won't be done until this afternoon. and also making some decision. the federal and state authorities who make the decision are worked well together and come to the conclusion that there are some things that they must do from a safety standpoint. so with that being said, i will let kevin explain to you and

the families we just came back from the families. one chamber has been checked. the chamber right here that has awe visual, it was not deployed. it was intact and not deployed so we know there was nobody in that chamber. so we have that one more chamber left to check and that is the concern and concentrate effort everybody has right now. with that, ill ahe let kevin go ahead and give you a more detailed explanation. >> thank you. >> thank you, governor. last evening, as we came down and briefed you, the rescue teams went underground about quarter till one in the morning and the intent of their work was to visit both underground

refuge chambers. well, they proceeded into the mine. they got to the first rescue chamber as the governor said being located close to where the long wall face was and it was not deployed. in that area where the rescue chamber was, there were 900 parts per million right at the chamber. they then broke the plane an went towards what is head gate 22 and when they broke the plane and went into these four connecting entries, we have smoke in all four of those entries and the smoke is traveling from this side toward the long wall face indicating we have a fire somewhere. it was at that time that a decision was made to evacuate the rescuers and to begin the inerting process that we talked

about last evening. we have the nitrogen set up, ready to go at bore hole number one. that is the locate in the back of head gate 22 where we have a fan that had been set up and pulling samples from. as soon as the rerescue temperatures get outside and i'm sure they are out by now, the unearthing process begins by sticking nitrogen in. in addition to that, as the governor mentioned, we have some bore holes that are going -- we are trying to put into the mine today. three bore holes that are of concern to us -- or that we need. the first one and most important is the bore hole that is going in close to the refuge chamber that we could not visit. it is down approximately 400 feet and the intent is to drill feverishly and get that in as soon as we can and the of the

mated time is somewhere around noon. now when that bore hole goes in, the thing we want to do is deploy the camera, stick it down the bore hole and see if that chamber has been deployed. in addition to that bore hole, we all have a bore hole toward the mouth of head gate 22 being referred to as hole number four, that is about 445 feet down. that should go in sometime this afternoon and that is a way for us to monitor at one location to see if the nitrogen has gotten to that point and has helped us inert the area where we think the fire may be. and the third bore hole, it only has 100 feet to go to break through. it is shown on the map as hole number three, the up are area of the map.

the thing that is unknown is exactly where the fire is at. >> you've been listening to i news conference getting an update in the situation where the relates rescuers have been looking for the four miners. they said when they reached one of the two rescue chambers, it had not been deployed basically saying the mines didn't make it to that rescue chamber. >> you can hear the exhaustion and the frustration at not being able it reach these folks. another news that they said they found evidence of a fire burning underground and that was preveptding them from getting to the area where the second chamber may be. they will still try to drop a camera down to see if there is any evidence of the folk being down there. >> that is expected to take a few more hours. maybe by noon today. we'll tax awe short break and come right back.

welcome back. getting ready for the weekend in. >> yes, indeed. as we get ready for the weekend, i want to stress, because we've been talking all week about it will get much cooler at the end of the week and it is. we'll feel that today. the weekend is going to be nice. it won't be in the 80s but it will be nice. let's take a look. we'll show you how things are starting. we'll start with the temperature trend. we were at 90 degrees for the bulk of this week. not anymore. high today about 61 degrees. but folks, our average high is 64 degrees for today. so by tomorrow, we are there. 65 and then on sunday, 74. that is wonderful. no, the not 80s or 90s but it is great. it does look like it will be dry. we are dealing withling aring showers this morning. let me show you what is going on out there. first off, our temperatures cooler. 5 # degree in the district. 46 at gaithersburg. 48 in frederick.

winchester, 43 degrees. they've dropped off a little bit more. the rain, that has been one the main factors during the last 1 hours and for the most part, we're pretty much done across most of the viewing area. out to the east, our viewers in eastern maryland, even some spots of southern maryland, eastern virginia, places like that, you are still dealing with some rainfall but that is pushing off to the north and east and during the next couple of hours, that will be getting out of here. the other thing we are dealing with are wind. wind winning gusting up to 28 miles per hour. today, early cloud, afternoon sun, breezy much cooler. your high about 61 degrees. that will do it for today. the five-day forecast, as i showed you, it will be nice for the next couple of days. it will be dry. temperatures mid-60s tomorrow, sunshine. a lot of sunshine on sunday. mid-70s, not bad at all. in the beginning of the next workweek looks dry at this point as well with temperatures raining from the mid-60s to around 70 on monday. that is a look at what is happening with the weather. it is time for ask the weather

guys. yes, most popular segment in local television. tucker barnes and i put our big heads together to answer your most pressing questions, weather-related or otherwise. today's question is from gerald mcdowell, sr. would writes during the large season, what process do you use to count the poll left hand in the air and how does it work? railroad timely question. as we said, yesterday, one of the worst days we've seen in years in term of our poll left hand count. we went to the experts for your answer. susan kozis ci. is a microbiologist at walter rey's forest glen annex in silver spring. they've been counseling the pollen count for more than a decade. she says wednesday was the second highest they have ever seen it. here is how they come up with the pollen count. >> the grains per cubic meter of air that we sample in a 4- hour period. it is sort of an average count for that 4 hour period.
